We love to come to the Red Key! And we love to bring Bob Kessing on Thursday nights when Dollie's homemade potato salad brings in the crowds. Bob Kessing, 90, had his first drink here at the Red Key in September of 1948, right before his senior year at Notre Dame. He is a St. Joan of Arc grad too. He loves to come here on Thursdays.

I first started coming to the Red Key in the 90's after MKNA board meetings. Then I brought my book club, and Russ and Dollie let me bring in my homemade pecan and lemon meringue pies for desert as long as Russ got a piece...Lemon Meringue, his favorite. One night i was lucky to meet Dan Wakefield here and he agreed to talk to my book club about his books at the Key. We had 24 people! Lots of people belong to country clubs, but I belong at the Red Key. It's like a neighborhood "Living Room"!

Sara and Alex met 6 months ago due to their shared love of Kurt Vonnegut. They say, "On a whim from Minneapolis and after 9 hours of road time, the first place we stopped in Indianapolis on our self guided Vonnegut tour was the Red Key Tavern. Hoping for some ambiance and a cold beer, we found much, much more. We've managed to meet Kurt's extended Indy family and are leaving with so much more than we naively intended." And that we got to have a drink with Kurt's friend, author Dan Wakefield!

Nate and his 1989 story
Nate and his 1989 story

"In 1989 I moved into the house right behind the Red Key. At that point I was 23 or 24....maybe 25 and I had no idea there were "rules". Not knowing the rules, I seemed to always draw Russ's attention but not in a good way. For several years he and I would argue and he'd eventually ask me to leave and I never really knew why. Today in 2016, it finally makes sense, there really were/are rules and I'd always break them...but not on purpose.

Rules...a good life has rules.

They are Russ's rules and they live on. It was always about respect for interesting people.

Bri says, "A couple of weeks ago a frequent renter of mine saw my ring and immediately recognized it. He had found a ring just like it 10 or so years ago in his restaurant. He still had the ring and brought it in. I saw the initials and posted about it on Facebook. Within only a few hours the ring was returned to the owner.
